‘Walkable City, Seoul’



As SMG’s major projects, urban walking trail project, aims to build a close link between the urban regeneration projects and the walking-friendly project in order to transform Seoul into a city good for walking in order to realize “Walkable City, Seoul.” To this end, the SMG will connect the tourist attractions of Seoul with a large mobile population and many tourists with five trails, and form good roads for walking by improving the pedestrian environment. Considering history and culture, natural resources, transportation, and a potential for the expansion of the connected walking trails, five walking trails (Connecting Trail, Jongno Unjong Trail, Cheonggyeo Water Trail, Old Scenery Trail, Forever-young Trail) have been selected. Among these, the upper part of the Connecting Trail was completely built in Aug. 2016 and the rest of the trail will be constructed before the end of the year.

Safe walking street for children

Seoul is expanding “Walking Street for Children”, limiting car traffic during the hours that children go to and leave schools in order to improve the traffic safety for children. In addition, Seoul will increase and improve the Children Protection Zones, which are currently operated, and speeding warning signs to prevent traffic accidents involving children.

Walking street for children

Walking Street for Children is a policy implemented under Section 12 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act and limits car traffic in some areas around schools when children go to and leave schools. By having a walking street for children, traffic safety for children will be enhanced. There are 81 walking streets for children and 141 walking streets will be added by 2018.

Children Protection Zone

Children Protection Zones will be expanded and improved in areas concentrated with daycare centers, kindergartens, and elementary schools. Currently, there are 1,704 Children Protection Zones and 33 zones will be designated in the future.

Speeding warning signs

Seoul plans to continuously expand speeding warning signs, showing the speed that vehicles are travelling. Speeding warning signs are known to notify drivers to reduce speed. Currently there are 87 and it will be increased to total of 117 by 2018.

Road Diet

“Road Diet”, a project to reduce roadway, which accounts for the most part of the roads, and expand the pedestrian road. The project will be implemented in daily living areas, in addition to the center and a sub-center of the city. Seoul will build more than 20 roads by 2016 so that citizens can recognize ‘Walkable City, Seoul’.
In particular, this Road Diet will be applied to each area according to their unique features, and specialized streets will be built in each district. Therefore, a pedestrian road applied the method to create a garden on road (S-type road) will be built at Seongbuk-gu and an antique furniture street in Yongsan-gu. It will contribute to the revitalization of local areas by increasing tourism as well as traffic safety in the region.
